Five boys’ tennis players to watch

Charlie Carmichael

School: Bellingham

Year: Junior

Position: Singles

Outlook: Was one of the top singles players a year ago, going 17-3 overall and 3-2 at bi-district. He’s continued to improve and will again be a force for the Red Raiders.

Brady Anderson

School: Sehome

Year: Junior

Position: Singles

Outlook: The returning All-Whatcom County Player of the Year, Anderson will again vie for a state title in 2A this year. His offense has improved, making him more of a threat.

Max Shmotolokha

School: Sehome

Year: Junior

Position: Singles

Outlook: Shmotolokha’s fiery temperament and powerful game put him right with Anderson for the best singles player in the NWC. He’s got the experience on the big stage, too.

Kevin Smiley

School: Squalicum

Year: Junior

Position: Singles

Outlook: Smiley was the Storm’s top singles player a year ago, and coach Joe O’Brien has been pleased with his growth. He’s trying to build off an 11-1 record in 2013.

Colton Young

School: Ferndale

Year: Junior

Position: Singles

Outlook: Young established himself last year by making it into the 3A WesCo South Division Tournament. Another year as a leader for Ferndale will lead to good results.
