Ferndale Golden Eagles boys’ tennis preview

Coach: Rudy Vendiola

Last year: 2-11 overall (eighth place in Northwest Conference). ... Wins came back-to-back against Anacortes and Lynden on Oct. 4 and Oct. 7. ... Sent two singles players and two doubles pairings to the 3A WesCo South Division Tournament. ... Rafe Strange and Chase Olson and Maxwell Jeffrey and Jacob Sorenson lost in their opening-round doubles matches. ... Singles players Colton Young and Liam Dickman also fell in the first round and were eliminated.

Players to watch: Maxwell Jefferies (So.); Tate Freeman (So.); Colton Young (Jr.); Lake Sullivan (Sr.).

Outlook: Ferndale, despite having just one senior, returns most of its core players from last year in Young, Freeman, Jefferies and Jacob Sorenson. All but Sorenson represented the Golden Eagles at the 3A sub-district tournament a year ago. “We’re young and we’re excited to get the season started,” Vendiola said in a phone interview. Lake Sullivan is the lone senior for Vendiola’s squad, and he’ll be leading the singles group of Jefferies, Young and Freeman. “We’ve had several challenges and ladder challenges and intra-squad scrimmages,” Vendiola said. The top doubles pairing will be Kevin Reiveld and Sorenson, who are building off a strong summer playing together. “They have improved their strokes a lot,” Vendiola said. Their growing chemistry is reason for optimism, Vendiola said, adding to the overall depth he believes his team has.
