Pioneers show resiliency in loss to Anacortes

Nooksack Valley’s volleyball team took Anacortes to its limit, but couldn’t finish off for the win Tuesday, Sept. 9, at home. The Seahawks earned a 19-25, 25-18, 25-13, 18-25, 15-13 win over the Pioneers in a back-and-forth contest.

Brianna Turner and Katrina Gimmaka led Nooksack Valley with eight and seven kills, respectively. Mariah Perry pitched in 34 digs, and Avery Tenkley had 25 digs.

“We just have to work on playing more consistent,” Nooksack Valley coach Katie Emmons said in a phone interview. “We definitely need to work on serving more aggressive and finding shots that work for us.”

Emmons added that Perry pitched in more for the team than what shows up in the stat line.

“I was impressed with the leadership and how we bounced back after that third set,” Emmons said. “Mariah Perry does a good job talking to blockers and hitters. She’s like a third coach.”

Nooksack Valley will look for improvement against Bellingham at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at home.
