Blaine’s hard-hitting effort was too much for Meridian’s volleyball team as the Borderites handed the Trojans a 25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 25-20 defeat Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Blaine High School.
The Borderites were led by Elle Moore’s 13 kills and 16 digs, and Mikayla Deming added 10 kills and seven blocks.
“Our serve receive has really improved and that ran our offense for us,” Blaine coach Bryan Clausen said in a phone interview. “The girls were a little rushed, they missed too many serves and had way too many blocking errors, but that’s mostly first-game jitters.”
Meridian was led by Alexia Bernardy’s 12 kills and 13 digs. Ellie Dennis added four aces, six kills and 10 digs. Claire Burkett led the team with 18 digs.

“We had a lot of aces, 12 in total, and we passed well,” Meridian coach Shannon Claeys said in a phone interview. “We kind of let them score points and made errors that cost us. The untimely errors were the difference.”
Blaine will look for another win at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at home against Mount Baker. Meridian plays next at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at La Conner.
