Coach: Laurie Quigley
Last year: 14-8 overall, 7-5 NWC (fifth place). ... Earned a spot in the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament, defeating Lakewood, Archbishop Murphy and Lynden to earn a spot at state. ... Lost the state opener to Spokane East Valley, but defeated Port Angeles, Yakima East Valley and Lynden to earn fifth place.
Players to watch: Haley Minninger (Sr., S); Katie Alvord (Sr., M); Kelsey Segren (Sr., M).
Outlook: Squalicum really came into its own last year, earning fifth place at the Class 2A state tournament, but that team lost nine seniors. Nine. Quigley does have the luxury of returning some key players, but she won’t truly know what she has until midway through the season with so many new faces taking key roles. “We are a lot different than last year,” she said in a phone interview, “but I’m really excited. ... They work really hard and they like being together. Just great kids.” She does have the luxury of returning both Segren and Alvord in the middle, providing the Storm squad with some solid punch from that part of the floor. “Katie started for us all year, and Kelsey played a lot at the end of the year,” Quigley said, reinforcing their importance to Squalicum’s run to fifth in state. “Our middle core has been really good so far.”
