Meridian Trojans volleyball preview

Coach: Shannon Claeys

Last year: 1-15 overall, 0-12 NWC (13th place). ... Opened the season with a straight-set win over Blaine before losing the next 15 matches. ... Lost to Lynden Christian and Friday Harbor in the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament to end the season.

Players to watch: Emma Weg (Jr., M/RS); Taylor Brakinreed (Sr., S); Alexia Bernardy (Jr., OH).

Outlook: Claeys said that the Trojans program is taking things day by day, match by match. Nothing more, nothing less. Meridian is coming off a rough 2013 season, in which it finished last in the NWC, but Claeys has a roster with a lot of experience returning. The teams brings back three seniors and six juniors. “So far I think we’re definitely showing a lot of improvement from last year,” she said in a phone interview. “We have a good group of juniors and some good senior leadership.” Weg and senior setter Brakinreed drew early praise from their coach for coming into camp and showing they had put in a lot of work during the offseason. Claeys said the character of this team is going to be on defense — grinding out points. “Just ball control,” she said. “We have really improved with that, and (we’re) improving every day.”
