Ferndale Golden Eagles volleyball preview

Coach: Patti Hoelzle

Last year: 13-6 overall, 9-3 NWC (fourth place). ... Won the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament after defeating Stanwood, Mountlake Terrace and Oak Harbor. ... Lost both matches at the 3A state tournament to Columbia River and Prairie.

Players to watch: Abby Reid (Sr., S); Whitney Walker (So., OH); Rose Compton (Jr., MB); Taryn Potter (Jr., OH).

Outlook: If replicating last year;s district championship and run to the state tournament is going to happen for Ferndale’s volleyball team, it’s going to involve some new faces. Hoelzle lost five seniors, but returns starters Reid, her team captain, and Walker and Porter on the outside. With that core nucleus, Hoelzle said she isn’t limiting her expectations given the amount of experience she lost. “They look promising. ... Usually my team has a good handful of seniors, so we have a little different feel with a younger team,” she said in a phone interview. Thus far, her group has come into preseason camp better than expected, she said, attributing much of their growth to club volleyball, which many of them play. “They are all very hard working girls,” she said. “They (Compton, Walker, Potter and Reid) are quite possibly the most committed I’ve coached in my 10 years of coaching.”
