Blaine Borderites volleyball preview

Coach: Bryan Clausen

Last year: 2-14 overall, 2-10 NWC (11th place). ... Fell to Mount Baker and King’s in the Borderites’ two matches in the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament, ending their season.

Players to watch: Lexi Greguski (Sr., L); Mikayla Deming (Sr., MB); Mandy Hayes (Sr., MB).

Outlook: Blaine, while not coming off a stellar performance last season, returns most of its varsity roster and should be able to make more of an imprint on the Northwest Conference this season than in years past. Greguski, Deming and Hayes highlight the group of seniors returning, but add to that Nicole Ortega and Elle Moore, and Clausen has a strong foundation to build something up in Blaine. He also has a group of four juniors to add to his five seniors, making Blaine one of the more experienced teams in the conference. Whether experience translates to more wins remains to be seen as the Borderites move to the 2A ranks this year. Blaine is going to have to clamp down on defense to take on some of the strong outside hitters the league has to offer, but things are looking up for the Borderites.
