PREP BOYS' SWIMMING: Squalicum beats Bellingham

December 10, 2009 09:54 PM

Squalicum’s numbers were too much for Bellingham standout swimmer Donovan Brogan.

The Storm boys’ swim team cruised to a 135-47 Northwest Conference victory over Bellingham on Thursday, Dec. 10, at Arne Hanna Aquatic Center. Brogan, however, had another outstanding swim to start the season.

Brogan qualified in state in two more individual events to give him four state times in two meets this season. Brogan won the 200 free-style in a state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 57.09 seconds and also won the 500 freestyle in a state-qualifying time of 5:16.99. Brogan already has qualified for state in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

Bellingham coach Matt Buckmaster credited Brogan’s work ethic of two workouts a day, six days a week, to his early-season success.

“As dedicated and devoted as he is … it’s no surprise at all he’s able to do the things he does,” Buckmaster said in a phone interview.

The Storm won every other event in the meet, including two wins each by Will Wadkins and Gus Evans. Wadkins won the 50 freestyle (24.29) and the 100 freestyle (56.27) while Evans took first in the 200 individual medley (2:20.35) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.49).

“They won more events, but what really killed us was the numbers game,” Buckmaster said. “It was a good meet. We had a lot of close races.”

Squalicum improved to 1-1 while Bellingham dropped to 0-2.
