The Mount Baker girls’ basketball team turned a two-point halftime lead into a 28-point victory in Friday’s 66-38 Northwest Conference win over Meridian at Deming.
“We changed our defense a little bit and we really focused on trying to make them take shots that they weren’t comfortable with,” Mount Baker coach Brenda Ellis said in a phone interview. “We stepped up our defense and our defense tends to fire up our offense as well.”
The Mountaineers led 32-30 at halftime, but outscored the Trojans 34-8 in the second half to keep Meridian winless on the season.
Courtney VanBrocklin provided almost enough offense by herself with her game-high 32 points for Mount Baker and also had four steals and three assists, and Krischelle Zwiers scored 10.
Meridian was led by Bree Park and Terri Tigert, who each finished with 12 points.
