Rich Skillman scored a game-high 20 points and Nooksack Valley defeated visiting Anacortes 37-35 in a Northwest Conference defensive struggle on Friday.
“Both teams struggled offensively,” Pioneers coach Tyler Mitchell said in a phone interview. “But I think it had a lot to do with defense.”
Skillman was 5 for 9 from the field, but more importantly he was 8 for 14 from the free-throw line down the stretch. Skillman also had six rebounds.
“He played really well for us,” Mitchell said. “They were focused on him. He didn’t get a whole lot of shots up.”
Anacortes held Nooksack Valley (6-3, 2-1 NWC) scoreless in the first quarter and held a 14-12 lead at halftime. The Pioneers entered the fourth quarter down by six points before scoring 21 points in the period.Nooksack Valley was down by one point with 45 seconds left before Dexter Beard made two free throws to take the lead. Skillman later added a layin to complete the Pioneers’ scoring.
