PREP WRESTLING PREVIEW: Five wrestlers to watch

Jacob Humphrey

School: Blaine

Year: Junior

Weight: 119 pounds

A state title has remained elusive for Humphrey, but that could change this season. After finishing second last year at 112 pounds he’s moved up to 119 where he will be a force. A physically tough and technically gifted wrestler, he’ll win at least one title before he is done and maybe two. He lives to wrestle.

Shane Hicks

School: Blaine

Year: Senior

Weight: 215 pounds

Hicks finished fourth at state last season as a 189-pounder and no doubt wants to improve on that mark as a senior at 215 pounds. Hicks is a good stand-up wres-tler, but the extra weight should help him on the mat. It’s a tough weight class, but he’ll be up for the challenge.

Dawson Patrick

School: Mount Baker

Year: Senior

Weight: 135 pounds

Patrick has a deep well of moves to choose from and really knows how to rack up points. He found his stride late in the season and rolled to a third-place finish at state at 125 pounds. He’s one of a handful of favorites to win a state title at 135 pounds this season.

McKray Jones

School: Bellingham

Year: Senior

Weight: 145 pounds

Jones was one match away from wrestling for a Class 2A state title last season until a pin ended his championships dreams. He’s back this year looking to improve on his third place finish from a year ago. He’s one of the most complete wrestlers in the Northwest Conference.

Ashley Phy

School: Mount Baker

Year: Senior

Weight: 145 pounds

Phy is the only returning state champion in Whatcom County. Phy captured the inaugural girls’ state title at 145 pounds last season at Mat Classic and will be looking for another this sea-son. If that’s not enough, she won all three of her matches at state by fall.
