PREP WRESTLING: Blaine preview

CAPSULE

Coach: Craig Foster

Outlook: The youthful Borderites – eight or nine freshmen or sophomores will likely be in the varsity lineup — dominated the Whatcom County League for several seasons prior to 1997, when Mount Baker unseated Blaine and became the team to beat until the past two years. The Borderites have had a slippery hold on one of the top 2A spots in Northwest Conference, but there’s no clear favorite this season. Jacob Humphrey took second place in the state tournament at 112 pounds a year ago, and Shane Hicks finished fourth at 189. Jesse Kilthau has qualified for state in three consecutive seasons. Foster, in his 17th season as head coach, says “a few quality veterans add leadership and toughness.”
