MOUNT BAKER MOUNTAINEERS
Coach: Rob Gray
Last year: 19-9 (9-4 NWC), finished fourth at Class 2A state tournament.
Players to watch: Jon Raney (Sr., G), Tyler Yost (Sr., F), Jesse Copps (Sr., G), Pete Valum (Sr., G), Derek Franks (Sr., F)
Outlook: The Mountaineers lost the top four scorers off the team that made the run at state last year with the graduation of Brandon Welch, Pete Galbraith, Dustin Bowser and Derek Compton. Gray said he’s not real sure where Mount Baker will find the scoring to replace them. Yost, who averaged 2.9 points in 26 games last year, could be a threat in the post, but he is 6-foot-3. Gray also said Valum has shown the ability to average 15 or more points per game on the junior varsity level. The team will also have Jon Raney (5.1 points per game last year) back to run the offense from the point. Gray said the Mounties should be strong defen-sively, as well, as the cohesive unit has been playing together since elementary school. “Maybe we’ll just have to win games 2-0 or something,” Gray said. Once Mount Baker finds its scoring touch, it should be in the middle of a five-team battle for the final four spots into the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament.
