A late goal was the difference as Western Washington University fell 2-1 to the University of British Columbia in a men’s soccer exhibition contest on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Harrington Field on the WWU campus.
Michael Mauro scored the winner for the Thunderbirds in the 85th minute, tapping in a loose ball inside the right post.
The Vikings had taken a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, as Trevor Bartels (Sr., Seattle/King’s) volleyed home a Jeremy Wentzel (Sr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) corner kick from eight yards out.
UBC equalized in the 31st minute when Luke Griffin finished off a rebound.
