WWU track and field team earns honors

Western Washington University women’s distance runner Katelyn Steen has been named the 2015 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II West Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year in an announcement Monday, March 9.

Steen, a senior from Sammamish, will compete at the NCAA II National Indoor Championships on March 13-14 at Birmingham, Ala.

Steen, who is going to indoor nationals for the first time, qualified in two events with top 10 times of 9:38.92 in the 3,000 meters, a school record, and 16:46.92 in the 5,000.

Distance runner Haley O’Connor and javelin thrower Katie Reichert have been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for March 1-7.

O’Connor, a senior from Sammamish, won the 1,500 meters in a meet record time of 4:37.26 at the University of Puget Sound Five-Way get-together. Her clocking was the best opening time of the season in the GNAC.

Reichert, a junior from Longview, took the national lead in the javelin with an automatic qualifying mark of 159-2.
