WWU men win seventh straight, beat Saint Martin’s

Forwards Jeffrey Parker and Joey Schreiber combined for 46 points, 31 of them in the first half, as Western Washington University won its seventh straight game, defeating Saint Martin’s University, 90-79, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball contest on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Saint Martin’s

Parker had 24 points and Schreiber came off the bench to score 22 as the Vikings improved to 17-10 overall and 10-7 in the GNAC. Ricardo Maxwell added 15 points and seven assists for WWU, which won its fourth straight road contest after starting the campaign without a triumph on an opponent’s floor in six contests.

SMU fell to 6-20 overall and 3-13 in the GNAC with its 12th loss in the last 13 games. Tyler Idowu had 24 points for the Saints, and Trey Ingram added 15, all in the first half.

The score was tied at 7-7 before the Vikings went on a 16-6 run, with Parker scoring 13of the points, to open a 23-13 lead eight minutes into the game.

The Saints pulled as close as three, and were down by just five, 39-34, before WWU closed the half with a 13-6 charge over the final 3:24 to take a 52-40 halftime lead. Schreiber had 11 points in the burst.

WWU then put the game out of reach by opening the second half with a 19-4 run that concluded with 12 straight Viking points, giving them a 71-44 advantage with 13:30 to play. The margin didn’t get below 15 points again until the final two minutes.

The Vikings shot 57.1 percent (36-of-63) from the field, hitting a season-high 14 3-pointers in 27 attempts (51.9 percent). They were 20-of-32 (62.5 percent) from the floor in the opening half, including 11 of 16 (68.8 percent) on 3-pointers.

Parker was 5 of 8 on 3-pointers, Schreiber 4 of 8, and Maxwell 3 of 4.

Saint Martin’s shot 53.0 percent (35 of 66) from the field and had a 34-31 rebounding edge.
