WWU women roll past Alaska Fairbanks, 91-60

Guard Jenni White had a game-high 18 points on 8-of-11 field-goal shooting as Western Washington University defeated University of Alaska Fairbanks, 91-60, on Thursday, Feb. 19, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball contest at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

Four players had at least 14 points for the Vikings, who improved to 18-7 overall and moved into second in the GNAC at 12-4 with their 12th victory in the last 14 contests.

UAF fell to 13-12 overall and 5-10 in the GNAC with its eighth loss in the last nine games. Stephanie Tomlinson led the Nanooks with 15 points and seven rebounds.

UAF jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first minute, but the Vikings responded with a 12-2 run in a span of less than three minutes to go up 12-7, and stayed in front the rest of the way.

A 12-2 burst late in the first half helped WWU hold a 45-28 advantage at halftime, and the Vikings continued to extend the margin throughout the second half.

WWU shot 50.8 percent (31 of 61) from the field, including 53.8 percent (7 of 13) on 3-pointers. Aleisha Hathaway was 4-of-4 on treys, finishing with 14 points.

Kayla Bernsen had 15 points for the Vikings, and Taylor Peacocke added 14. Peacocke, who entered the game second nationally in NCAA II in free throw percentage at 92.8 percent, missed her second attempt of the game, ending her consecutive streak at 25, two short of the school record.

Forward Jordan Wilson, UAF’s leading scorer on the season at 16.3 points a game, returned after missing seven games with a foot injury and had 10 points. Kailee Skjold also had 10.
