WWU topples No. 15 and GNAC-leading Western Oregon, 73-50

Forward Jeffrey Parker scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the first half as Western Washington University ended nationally ranked Western Oregon University’s 11-game winning streak with a convincing 73-50 triumph on Thursday, Feb. 19, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball contest in Monmouth, Ore.

Anye Turner added 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Vikings, who improved to 16-10 overall and 9-7 in the GNAC with their sixth consecutive victory, and clinched a spot in the six-team GNAC post-season tournament.

WOU, ranked No.15 in this week’s National Association of Basketball Coaches/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, fell to 21-4 overall but remain atop the GNAC standings at 13-2. Julian Nichols had 13 points and Devon Alexander added 12 for the Wolves, who played without all-conference forward Andy Avgi because of a medical condition.

There were five ties and 12 lead changes, with the last deadlock being at 44-44 just over four minutes into the second half. The Vikings then broke the game open, holding the Wolves scoreless for nearly nine minutes and running off 16 straight points to take a 60-44 lead with 7:36 to play.

Guard Ricardo Maxwell, who finished with 16 points, had eight of them in the decisive burst.

WWU shot 51.7 percent (30 of 58) from the field, and held Western Oregon, which had a season-low in points, to just 32.3 percent (21 of 65). The Wolves were just 6 of 32 (18.8 percent) in the second half, and scored just six points in the final 15 minutes.

Turner, who ranks second nationally in blocks with 76 and fourth in blocked shots per game at 3.2, had two blocks Thursday. His career total of 160 is just two short of third place.

Mac Johnson had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Vikings, who had a 43-30 advantage on the boards.
