WWU shows no love to NNU in 86-55 win on Valentine’s Day

Center Mac Johnson scored 20 points and forward Jeffrey Parker added 19 as Western Washington University jumped to an early lead and defeated Northwest Nazarene University, 86-55, on Saturday, Feb. 14, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball contest at Sam Carver Gymnasium.

Forward Anye Turner added 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots for the Vikings, who extended their season-best winning streak to five games and improved to 15-10 overall, 8-7 in the GNAC.

Alex Birketoft had game-highs of 22 points and eight rebounds for NNU, which fell to 10-14 overall and 8-6 in the GNAC. Erik Kinney added 16 points for the Crusaders.

WWU took control quickly, jumping to a 12-2 lead 4:22 into the game. The Vikings used a 9-1 charge late in the first half to take a 43-23 lead with 2:12 left in the period and held a 45-28 advantage at halftime.

The margin was never less than 15 in the second half, and was never less than 29 points in the final five minutes.

The Vikings shot 51.7 percent (31 of 60) from the field, and 81.0 percent (17 of 21) on free throws, and had a 38-26 advantage in rebounds.

NNU senior Kevin Rima reached the 1,000-point mark in career scoring on a post-up midway through the second half. Rima, who had averaged 30 points in his last three games against the Vikings, finished with eight.

The Crusaders shot just 38.9 percent (21 of 54) from the field, the second-lowest mark WWU has held an opponent to in the last 12 contests.
