WWU fights back for 66-57 win at Saint Martin’s

Overcoming a 14-point first-half deficit, Western Washington University fought back for a 66-57 win over Saint Martin’s University on Wednesday, Feb. 11, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball contest at Marcus Pavilion in Lacey that was regionally telecast on ROOT Sports.

Forward Taylor Peacocke had a team-high 19 points for the Vikings, who improved to 16-7 overall and 10-4 in the GNAC with the 10th win in their last 12 games.

Saint Martin’s, which fell to 8-13 overall and 5-8 in GNAC action, got a career and game-high 23 points, 17 in the first half, from guard Krista Stabler.

The Saints went out to a 17-4 lead in the first six minutes, led by as many as 14, 30-16, with 6:57 left in the first half, and were ahead by five, 35-30, at the intermission.

WWU scored the first six points of the second half to take its first lead of the game at 36-35. The Vikings were still up by just one, 46-45, with 10:50 to go before scoring 10 straight points by five different players to lead 56-45, with 7:01 left. SMU never got closer than six after that.

Guard Katie Colard scored 13 points for WWU and Tia Briggs came off the bench with 12 on 5-of-8 floor accuracy.

Liz Mills had 16 points for SMU, which also got a game-high 15 rebounds from Megan Wiedeman.

Peacocke made all six of her free throws, extending her string to 22. She ranks second nationally in NCAA Division II in free-throw percentage at 92.8 (77-of 83).

The victory was the 16th straight in the series for WWU, which holds a 64-10 advantage.

It was the 700th game for WWU head coach Carmen Dolfo, who has a 510-190 record.
