WWU men earn win over Seattle Pacific

Guard Ricardo Maxwell and forward Jeffrey Parker led a balanced attack with 16 points each as Western Washington University grabbed its first conference road victory of the season, defeating Seattle Pacific University, 82-72, on Thursday, Feb. 5, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball contest at Royal Brougham Pavilion on the SPU campus.

Mac Johnson had 15 points and Kyle Impero added 14 for the Vikings, who improved to 12-10 overall and 5-7 in the GNAC.

Cory Hutsen had 14 points for SPU, which fell to 16-6 overall and 8-4 in the GNAC with its second straight loss. Brendan Carroll added 11points for the Falcons, the defending GNAC regular-season and tournament champions.

The Vikings used a run of 12 straight points, holding SPU scoreless for nearly six minutes, to take a 22-10 lead with 8:34 left in half, and held a 35-26 lead at halftime.

WWU maintained the advantage in the second half by shooting 68.2 percent (15 of 22) from the field. SPU never got closer than seven points, and the Vikings led by as much as 20, 66-46, with six minutes left.

For the game, WWU shot 55.8 percent (29 of 52) from the field, and held the Falcons to 44.4 percent (28 of 63).

“Our guys have been working so hard, that’s a nice win for them,” WWU coach Tony Dominguez said in a news release. “They just hunkered down and played defense like they’ve been in practice. It was nice that they could show that tonight.”
