WWU loses 81-76 to Alaska Anchorage, suffer second straight home loss

A furious rally from a 25-point deficit fell short, as Western Washington University suffered an 81-76 loss to University of Alaska Anchorage on Thursday, Jan. 29, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball contest at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

The Vikings, who trailed 53-28 three minutes into the second half, got as close as three points multiple times in the last two minutes before suffering their fourth loss in the last five contests, falling to 10-10 overall and 3-7 in the GNAC. Forward Anye Turner paced WWU with 24 points and 15 rebounds.

Dom Hunter came off the bench to score 22 points for UAA, which improved to 11-9 overall and 7-3 in the GNAC. Derrick Fain added a season-high 19 points on 6-of-8 field-goal shooting, including 4-of-6 on 3-pointers.

The Vikings trailed by 22 points, 57-35, with under 13 minutes remaining, but ran off nine straight points, seven of them by Turner, to close the margin to 13, 57-44, with 8:23 to go. A 10-2 charge in a span of just over three minutes narrowed the gap to five, 68-65, with 3:23 left.

WWU pulled within three points on four occasions in the last 2:02, but the Seawolves held on by hitting 9-of-11 free throws in the final 70 seconds. UAA had just two field goals in the final 13 minutes, both by Travis Thompson, who finished with 15 points.

Jeffrey Parker had 15 points for the Vikings, and Ricardo Maxwell added 10.

The defeat, following a 90-87 loss to GNAC-leading Western Oregon last Saturday, marked the first back-to-back home losses for the Vikings since late in the 2010-11 season, when they dropped their last three contests at Carver Gym.
