WWU’s White scores 19 but Vikings lose up north

Guard Jenni White scored a season-high 19 points, but it wasn’t enough as Western Washington University fell to nationally ranked University of Alaska Anchorage, 71-58, on Thursday, Jan. 22, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball contest at the Alaska Airlines Center on the UAA campus.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Vikings, who fell to 11-6 overall and 5-3 in the GNAC.

UAA, ranked No.3 in the latest Top 25 Poll, improved to 17-11 overall and 7-1 in the GNAC with its fifth consecutive triumph. Forward Megan Mullings had a game-high 22 points for the Seawolves on 9-of-12 field-goal shooting.

The Vikings, who entered the game leading NCAA II in field-goal percentage (49.6), shot just 36.1 percent (22 of 61) from the field, their second-lowest mark of the season.

WWU led just once, at 6-4 less than five minutes into the game. But UAA went on a 24-7 run to open up a 28-13 advantage with 7:30 left in the first half, and held a 35-24 lead at halftime.

The gap remained in double digits the entire second half, reaching a high of 21 points, 63-42, with six minutes left.

Kayla Bernsen and Kiana Gandy each had 10 points for Western. The Vikings had a 41-39 advantage in rebounds with Bernsen and Taylor Peacocke each grabbing a game-high eight, but committed a season-high 22 turnovers.
