Former Western coach joins staff for BC Lions

Former Western Washington University football coach Robin Ross was added to the staff of the Canadian Football League’s BC Lions as a defensive line coach, the club announced Thursday, Jan. 22.

Ross was one of three additions announced by head coach Jeff Tedford on Thursday, joining offensive coordinator George Cortez and offensive line coach Doug Malone.

“Each of these men bring significant experience and expertise to our club, and I am very pleased to welcome them aboard,” Tedford said in a press release. “As a group, we are focused on one singular goal and that is to bring a championship home to fans of the BC Lions.”

Ross will be making his first appearance in the CFL in a career that spans nearly 40 years. He and Tedford worked together on the coaching staffs at Fresno State in 1996 and Oregon in 1998. Ross most recently worked as special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Wyoming in 2012 and 2013. Ross also has coached at Long Beach State, Cincinnati, Washington State, Oregon State and UNLV and coached two seasons with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders.

Ross spent three seasons at the helm for the Vikings before the school dropped the program following the 2008 season, in which the coach led Western to its first postseason appearance since 1999.
