WWU beaten 72-65 by No.5 Tarleton State at South Point Hoops Classic

Despite a rally that cut a 10-point deficit to two with 2:50 remaining, Western Washington University was beaten 72-65 by nationally ranked Tarleton State University on Thursday, Dec. 18, in first-day men’s basketball action at the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic being held at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas.

WWU, which has yet to win on the road, fell to 6-4. The Vikings were led by the 21 points of guard Jaamon Echols. They also got 14 from forward Anye Turner, all in the second half, and forward Joey Schreiber added 10.

TSU, ranked No. 5 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, remained undefeated at 9-0. The Texans got a combined 35 points on 16-of-22 field-goal shooting and 19 rebounds from guard Mo Lee and forward Davene Carter. Lee had 19 points on 8-of-12 accuracy and nine rebounds, and Carter contributed 16 points on 8-of-10 marksmanship and 10 rebounds.

WWU, which trailed by just four, 29-25, at halftime, was behind by as many as 11 points, 47-36, with 12:44 remaining and 10, 62-52, with five minutes to go.

The Vikings scored eight straight points to get within two, 62-60, with 3:06 left as Turner converted a three-point play and Echols scored on a layup and 3-pointer. And they still trailed by just two, 64-62, with 2:50 remaining.

But TSU scored the next six points, four by TaShawn Mabry, who finished with 11 points, in finishing the game with an 8-3 run. WWU never got closer than six during that stretch.
