Parker leads WWU men to win at home

Forward Jeffrey Parker scored 18 of his team-high 21 points in the first 13 minutes, helping Western Washington University claim a season-opening 78-52 victory over Notre Dame de Namur University in first-day action Friday, Nov. 14, at the 13th Chuck Randall Men’s Basketball Classic being played at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

Joey Schreiber added 19 points for WWU, ranked No.11 in the NABC/NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25, and Anye Turner blocked seven shots.

Jalen Young led NDNU with a game-high 25 points, having all but one of the Argonaut field goals during a 25-minute stretch in the middle of the contest.

Parker, who was 5-of-6 from the field in the first half, scored nine points as the Vikings jumped to a 12-2 lead four minutes into the game. WWU later used a run of 11 straight points to open up a 40-13 lead with 4:47 left in the first half, its biggest lead of the game.

WWU, which won its season-opener for the seventh straight season, held a 44-26 lead at halftime and never led by less than 16 points in the second half.

It was the 17th straight Randall Classic triumph for the Vikings, who are 22-3 all-time in the tourney.

The Vikings held NDNU to just 29.0 percent (18-of-62) field-goal shooting. WWU hit 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field and had a 42-32 advantage in rebounds.

WWU was without guards Jaamon Echols and Ricardo Maxwell, who are serving a two-game suspension for a violation of NCAA regulations for improperly playing in a tournament last spring.
