Freshman Jenn Paul holds a three-shot lead in medalist play and Western Washington University has a five-shot advantage in the team standings after Monday’s first round at the Sonoma State University Women’s Golf Fall Preview Tournament in Rohnert Park, Calif.
Tuesday’s second and final round begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
The Vikings, who are coming off a championship effort last week at the Dixie State Invitational, shot 8-over par 296 to top the 10-team field. Chico State is second at 301, St. Edward’s TX third at 303 and host Sonoma State fourth at 306.
“They played well today, and now it’s important for them to stay focused,” WWU coach Bo Stephan said in a news release. “The course has a northwest feel to it, the greens are what we’re used to and it was overcast, so it was very comfortable for us.”
Paul fired a 2-under 70. Tied for second at 1-over 73 are Bianca Armanini from Chico State and Linda Brown from Cal State East Bay.
WWU’s Anna Bourland and Brooke Branigan each shot 75 and are in a five-way tie for seventh.
The Vikings’ Audrey Orem shot 76 and is tied for 12th and Kristen Hansen shot 80 and is tied for 28th.
