Despite having a slight edge in shot attempts, Western Washington University suffered a 2-0 defeat to Northwest Nazarene University on Thursday, Sept. 25, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s soccer contest at Robert S. Harrington Field on the WWU campus.
The Vikings fell to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference action.
Julio Castillo assisted on both goals for Northwest Nazarene, which won its fourth straight game, improving to 5-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the GNAC.
Castillo’s chipped pass behind the WWU defense in the 29th minute freed up Erik Anderson to slot the ball just inside the far post for his sixth goal of the season, giving the Crusaders a 1-0 halftime lead.

The Vikings had their best chance to equalize five minutes into the second half when Tye Hastings (Sr., Mill Creek/Jackson) rocketed a shot off the crossbar from 16 yards out.
NNU got an insurance goal in the 78th minute. With his back to the goal, Castillo flicked a pass through with the outside of his right foot, freeing up Fredy Razo, who beat a Viking defender and finished from a tight angle to the left of goal.
