Off night costs Vikings, as Cal Baptist sweeps

Western Washington University had an attack percentage of just .129 as it was swept by Cal Baptist University, 25-11, 28-26, 25-16, in opening-day action Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference/Pacific West Conference Crossover Tournament at Van Dyne Gym in Riverside, Calif..

WWU, which moved up three places to No. 9 in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll, fell to 4-2.

CBU (4-1) hit .352, with Michelle Waber contributing a match-high 13 kills and Jenna Perry adding 10 with just one error in 15 attempts.

The Vikings were led by Kelsey Moore’s 10 kills.

“We just lost our composure at key times,” WWU head coach Diane Flick said in a press release. “We’re going to go through some growing pains this year, and this was one of them.”

CBU outscored the Vikings, 20-6, in the first set after it was tied at 5-5. Two kills by Rachel Roeder gave WWU a 26-25 lead in the second set, but the Lancers took three straight points for the win. CBU never trailed in the third set.

WWU meets Azusa Pacific (11:15 a.m.) and Dixie State (6 p.m.) on Friday, and Point Loma (5 p.m.) on Saturday.
