Whatcom ends season on 74-63 loss against Olympic

The Whatcom men’s basketball team was defeated by Olympic College 74-63 on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Olympic College.

Casey Leek led the Orcas (6-19 overall, 4-10 NWAC) with 16 points. Mikeal Anderson finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Sam Landerholm added 11 points with three 3s.

“They (Olympic) came out with more sense of urgency than we did tonight,” Whatcom coach David Dunham said in a phone interview. “It caused us to play out of our comfort zone and we didn’t play our best tonight.”

Even though the Orcas outrebounded the Rangers 40-24, committing 23 turnovers is what hurt Whatcom the most in the loss.

“They scored 26 points off the turnovers,” Dunham said, “we’re a young team and we competed the best we could.”

Whatcom has eight freshman on its roster this season, which makes Dunham eager for the upcoming season.

“I’m excited about next year’s team,” he said. “We had four freshman starters. That experience of starting this year will come into play next year. I’m just looking forward to that.”
