Seniors finish with all-star series

After jostling for the top spot in the Northwest Conference throughout the regular season, senior softball players from high schools in Whatcom and Skagit counties will get one more chance to decide where the best softball is played.

Seniors from nine high schools around the area are set to play in the Northwest District Senior Game today. The doubleheader starts at 6 p.m. at Volunteer Park in Anacortes with a second game scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Whatcom County team is made up of 13 players from six schools, including All-Northwest Conference first-team pick Erin Gelwicks from Nooksack Valley, and second-team picks Brittany Cagey of Ferndale and Pioneers catcher Jessica Wilburn.

The Skagit team consists of 11 players from Anacortes, Sedro-Woolley and Burlington-Edison. The Tigers’ Caitlin Dotlich and the Cubs’ Tessa Bisbey and Alyse Crider lead the team from the South.

Lynden’s Steve Petersen and Ferndale’s Holly Hilton are coaching the Whatcom team. The Skagit squad is coached by Anacortes’ Tom Swapp and Sedro-Woolley’s Laura Schmidt.
