Concerned about color of LED lighting

I believe a letter in the Oct. 29 paper questioning the city of Bellingham’s color choice for new LED street lights is right on. I, too, have attempted to gather information regarding these lights by contacting the mayor’s office. Unfortunately, the information I received spoke only to the efficiency of the LED lights and how much money the city would save by changing over. Not once, but twice I asked Mayor Linville about the color temperature while also pointing out to the mayor that the use of color temperatures approaching 5,000 Kelvin has generated a great deal of concern in other communities. There are a growing number of articles and studies on the deleterious effects of harsh blue light on the human physic. The city may find itself in an embarrassing position of not having done its homework and with a warehouse full of street lights, paid for with tax money, that the public hates. Hopefully it is not too late for the city to research this issue and obtain the appropriate color of street lights.
