Caregivers want retirement benefit

I have been a caregiver for 30 years. I have had numerous different kinds of clients through the years. From diabetics to clients that can’t take care of themselves. I take them shopping, cook for them, do their laundry, and take them to their doctor appointments; whatever was needed to make sure my clients are safe and secure in their own home.

Caregiving is sometimes a thankless job, but it’s very rewarding as I am needed and I love my job taking care of people. But I just make enough to pay household bills and to take care of car repairs as needed and I can’t save anything for retirement. If our clients didn’t have caregivers they would be in nursing homes so we are a very needed service. I’m telling my story so our legislators will fund our contract and give us a small retirement benefit that we need and deserve. I have worked hard all my life and I’m 56 and would like to be able to retire one day.
