Aside from the need to replace our existing county jail, due to safety concerns for inmates and staff, as well as its deteriorating condition, it seems that another factor is being overshadowed during the current debate over incarceration versus treatment. Too many serious offenders in this county are being released among an unsuspecting citizenry due to a lack of space in the existing jail. It’s time to move forward with construction of the new jail, as originally proposed and approved by the voters. The mental health issue is a distraction that should not preclude protection of the public as soon as possible.
