Selling emission allowances reminds me of the time in history when sinners could buy indulgences.
I believe all cap-and-trade will do is place further burdens on our state’s already beleaguered businesses. Those in rural areas will be particularly hard hit, such as agriculture and manufacturing, where our state’s highest unemployment already occurs. Working families will suffer, as food and energy bills go up.
And let’s not kid ourselves that the funds generated will be reinvested in wildlife and natural resources. Under Washington state House Bill 1314, they receive nothing. As to believing the bill will reduce carbon emissions, it’s time for a reality check. Let’s call it what it is, a tax increase.
