Happy with council support for tribe

I wholeheartedly support the Lummi Nation’s decision to ask the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to reject the application for the coal terminal at Cherry Point. I’m also excited to see the leadership shown by new Bellingham City Council member Dan Hammill for being the one to move to support a letter from City Council and the mayor’s office to Senators Cantwell and Murray that affirms their support for Lummi Nation’s treaty rights under the Point Elliott Treaty. It is exactly this type of leadership that local government can show in standing up for treaty rights and stopping a coal terminal that I believe is unwelcome in our community.
