Happy Lummi Nation opposes coal terminal

I want to thank the Lummi Nation for making what I believe to be a bold and straightforward move to inform the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers that they will not allow any coal terminal being proposed to use the waters they rely on for fishing. By making this statement, I believe all of Whatcom County and Washington (and the planet) will benefit from a healthier environment for our children and our children’s children.

The U.S. government has a treaty with the Lummi Nation giving the tribe control over the waters they use for tribal fishing. This treaty must be respected and abided by. This is a great time for the U.S. government to also make a bold statement by denying any permit to SSA Marine or any company that wants to use the Lummi tribal waters without their permission. No debate. No briefs. No appeals. Just accept it. Their water rights are not ours to give away.
