Concerned renters hurt if landlords licensed

With regards to what I believe to be the continuing misguided direction of the City Council to require licensing of landlords and their rental properties, the letter headlined “Unhappy with Bellingham rental home licensing” hit a nerve for me.

I am in total agreement. Under no circumstances should government be allowed to inspect property without probable cause. Great care would have to be taken to protect our renter’s rights with regards to their homes. Yes, rental properties are the home of the renters who live there. I try to create a sense of community for the people who rent from me. This is built on trust and relationships, something that cannot be licensed.

Tread carefully, any notions of regulating landlords may have very detrimental fallout for tenants.
