Wonders why people vote against their self-interest

A recent letter demonstrated what I think was blinkered reasoning. It correctly pointed out with wages stagnated, a living wage is the solution not a Food Bank extension here in Bellingham. However, jobs at Cherry Point are not going to resolve low wages paid throughout Bellingham. Undoubtedly Georgia Pacific will benefit but China burning our coal exports will create more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere resulting in health and environmental problems that the Bellingham taxpayer cannot afford. A coal-exporting jobs solution was no better than the cartoon of that day. The one that had turkeys supporting a hatchet-wielding candidate. In other words, the turkeys among us vote against their self-interest. Let us not be turkeys who cannot think strategically. As the folk song goes “When will we ever learn?”
