VOLUNTEER VIEW: Community Boating Center provides watercraft education

Community Boating Center was established in 2006 and had more than 1,500 volunteer hours in 2014.

Purpose: The Community Boating Center is a grassroots, volunteer-driven charitable nonprofit with a mission to foster small watercraft education, access and safe recreation on Bellingham Bay. Programs and services are open to all. Much-appreciated donations, season pass sales and dry-moorage fees enable the Community Boating Center to provide the skills and safety education that is the core of the organization’s mission.

Volunteer highlights: Folks stepped up to help with bookkeeping, direct customer service, boat repairs and cooking salmon for the volunteer appreciation party. Every role is important, from the boardroom to the beach! Special thanks to Aaron Goldfogel who organized the construction of a new rack for sailing dinghies as his Eagle Scout project.

Signature fundraiser: Annual winter dance in February hosted by the Corinthian Yacht Club to support the Community Boating Center. A silent auction is traditionally included with the event.

Wish list: Boston Whaler-style skiff for use as a coach-boat in youth camps, small bench-top drill press and a portable air compressor.

Volunteer needs: Folks who can commit to tabling at the Farmer’s Market and folks who can commit to 4-hour blocks as waterfront assistants during the operating season.
