VOLUNTEER VIEW: Sean Humphrey House provides for those living with HIV/AIDS

Sean Humphrey House was established in 1995 and had about 64 volunteers in 2014.

Purpose: Sean Humphrey House, a nonprofit adult family home provides safe housing and 24-hour personal care services to low-income individuals living with HIV/AIDS who often suffer from other diseases, disabilities and forms of mental illness. A wide variety of services are offered for residents, including medical supervision, rehabilitation, life-style training to mitigate the effects of the disease and recreational activities. The aim is to foster good physical health, as well as the feelings of confidence, self-esteem and a sense of security within the residents.

Volunteer highlights: The dedicated Board of Directors, volunteers, nursing assistants, donors, community members and staff support the mission every day. Sean Humphrey House is fortunate to have a phenomenal team of volunteers that are dedicated, committed individuals. Volunteers are engaged in a wide array of activities that range from group projects, college interns, dinner volunteers, dog walkers, gardeners/landscapers, resident outings, office work, special events, outreach and even maintaining the fish tank!

Signature fundraiser: Sean Humphrey House is hosting its 8th annual Cinco de Mayo fundraising event, a Mexican-themed fiesta featuring a traditional dinner buffet, intriguing silent and live auctions, fun raffle and live music. This year’s event will be held May 2 at BelleWood Acres. All proceeds benefit the residents at Sean Humphrey House. Reservations: $60 per person. Sponsorships available. Wish List: New kitchen cookware (pots and pans), small conference table with chairs for six, new washer and dryer, small storage shed. spring outdoor planters with flowers, new kitchen flooring, tickets to movies, museums, theatres, etc., Cinco de Mayo sponsorships, cash donations.

Volunteer needs: We would love to have more dinner volunteers, no experience necessary. Shift is 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Easy, down-home family recipes. Caregivers are available to provide assistance. Sean Humphrey House application required with completed background check, food handlers permit and two-step TB test.
