VOLUNTEER VIEW: RE Sources for Sustainable Communities aids healthy future

RE Sources for Sustainable Communities was established in 1983 and had about 490 volunteers in 2014.

Purpose: RE Sources for Sustainable Communities supports clean energy, clean water, sustainable schools, and low carbon lifestyle. We are building a movement to support sustainable community solutions, Puget Sound recovery and a healthy future. The RE Store has been building a culture of reuse and conservation for over 20 years. Through the green jobs training program, we empower trainees from all walks of life to gain the essential job skills and sustainability education to advocate for our environment and community’s health. The Clean Energy program builds public insistence for a clean-energy economy. The Clean Water program monitors and protects Puget Sound and its uplands. Sustainable Schools helps the next generation create a healthy world. Low-carbon lifestyle puts the tools of sustainability into people’s hands. RE Sources is powered by you.

Volunteer highlights: Nearly 200 volunteers turned out last Independence Day for our premier fundraising event, Yes, We CAN! Canned Craft Beer Festival – a 4th of July street festival for the whole family. Without the enthusiasm and commitment of our volunteers and generous business partners, this neighborhood festival would not be possible.

Signature fundraiser: Yes, We CAN! Canned Craft Beer Festival from 6 – 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, on J and Astor streets, in the Lettered Streets neighborhood. We are hosting the second annual Yes, We CAN! Canned Craft Beer Festival to raise awareness and funds for our work protecting and improving the health of our community. We are promoting beer in cans to highlight the lighter environmental impact recycled aluminum has over glass – from recycling rates and methods to transport. We hope to crush the can stigma by highlighting the superior quality of beer in cans.

Wish list: Business sponsors, volunteers (individuals and groups), food trucks, kid entertainers (face painters, balloon shapers, bubble makers), dunk tank, photo booth, alcohol-free sponsored station, breweries, cideries, meaderies and kombucha brewers.

Volunteer needs: Distribute flyers, help with games, pour beer, sell tickets, or help clean up at this year’s Yes, We CAN! 4th of July Festival. Get in free, have a ball, and help RE Sources continue to protect and empower our community.
