Amazing swim’s rules: Leave Cuba, arrive Florida

The community of marathon swimmers has questioned the legitimacy of 64-year-old Diana Nyad’s swim across 110 miles of the Florida Straits between Cuba and Key West. They say Nyad didn’t follow the so-called English Channel Rules. To which we say, that’s a boatload of whale blubber.

First of all, Florida waters are different from the English Channel and pose unique challenges, notably sharks and jellyfish. That requires different rules. The Canadian Football League has different rules than the NFL, but it’s still football.

Secondly, who cares? This is a story about a senior citizen who spent 53 hours in the water accomplishing a lifelong dream, after four previous attempts. Nyad never gave up on her dream, and that alone is what makes her feat so inspiring.
