The Port of Olympia commission has decided to interview all candidates who applied for appointment to fill the vacant District 3 seat.
Nine people had applied by the May 8 deadline: Jerry Farmer, Frederick Finn, Lawrence Goodman, Bob Jones, Michelle Morris, Dick Pust, George Sharp, E.J. Zita and Bill Wells. Wells has since withdrawn from the race, which means eight candidates will be interviewed.
Four of the candidates — Farmer, Jones, Zita and Goodman — have also filed to run in the upcoming primary election Aug. 4.
The commissioners will interview the applicants from 1 to 5 p.m. June 1-2 at the Tumwater Town Center, 7241 Cleanwater Drive SW, Tumwater. Each interview will last 40 minutes, and a schedule will be released within the next week.

“This way, it’s fair to all people,” Commissioner Bill McGregor said. “Eight is a workable number.”
The commission is expected to appoint the new commissioner June 10 to replace Sue Gunn, who resigned for health reasons last month. The new commissioner’s first meeting is likely to take place June 18 following a swearing-in ceremony at the Thurston County Courthouse.
