More than 50 people filed for the 15 seats on the once-in-a-decade opportunity to reshape the county government as a member of Whatcom County’s fourth Charter Review Commission. Five members will be elected from each of the three county council districts. Members serve on the committee for a year with no salary, though the county does reimburse them for expenses.
The commission, mandated by the county charter, reviews the existing structure of government and looks for ways to enhance government efficiency. The commission also seeks public input and its meetings are open to the public. Proposed amendments to the charter must still be approved by a majority of county voters.
