President Barack Obama announced this afternoon that White House press secretary Jay Carney would be stepping down, and that principal deputy press secretary Josh Earnest would take over the job.
Carney has served as press secretary since February 2011, when he replaced Robert Gibbs. Prior to that he had served as Vice President Joe Biden’s press secretary from the start of the administration. He joined the White House from Time magazine, where he led the Washington Bureau.
Earnest’s entire career has come in politics. He has worked on campaigns for, among others, Obama and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
