SUV narrowly misses Washington state students boarding school bus

An SUV narrowly missed hitting several elementary school students Friday when it passed a school bus on the shoulder in Graham, Wash., the Bethel School District said.

The district released bus video Monday with three angles of the near miss.

District spokeswoman Krista Carlson said she wasn’t sure of the exact time, but that it was definitely before school, about 7 a.m., she thought.

The bus driver was stopped near 224th Street and 124th Avenue East, with lights flashing and signals up, when the driver of a white SUV passed the bus on the right and almost hit the kids. The students were on their way to Nelson Elementary School.

There were no injuries. Carlson said the SUV apparently skimmed one of the kids’ shoes.

The stretch where the SUV passed doesn’t really have much shoulder, she said

“This is kind of reflective of a problem that we have out here in Graham,” Carlson said. “We have a lot of people that pass buses illegally.”

She said the district doesn’t have any additional information about the vehicle.

She asks anyone who knows more to call the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department. The Sheriff’s Department nonemergency number is (253) 798-4721.
