A large fire engulfed a single wide mobile home north of Ferndale just after 5 p.m. Sunday, March 9, according to fire officials.
Firefighters had completely extinguished the fire by 6:45 p.m., but the home, located at 7089 Tall Cedars Lane, was a total loss, Whatcom County Fire District 7 Assistant Chief Larry Hoffman said. Firefighters planned to clear the scene by about 7 p.m.
The fire left two men without a home, and destroyed their belongings.
One roommate, who was home at the time, was hurt when he had to jump through a window to get out of the house, Hoffman said. He was taken to St. Joseph hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The homeowner, Walter "Jake" Fryxell, was not home when the fire started.
"We don't have any idea what started (the fire) at this point," Hoffman said.
The home was built in 1968 and, with the land it sits on, was worth $48,805 in 2013, according to the Whatcom County Assessor's website. Fryxell had owned the home since 2003.
