Brief power outage to affect downtown Bellingham

BELLINGHAM — About 80 customers of Puget Sound Energy were expected to lose power for an hour Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 4, in downtown Bellingham.

The planned outage — using the term loosely — was supposed to last from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. A lot of the affected customers will be businesses and downtown apartments, said PSE spokesman Ray Lane.

Crews needed to make emergency repairs before the frigid weather takes hold in northwest Washington, Lane said. The preemptive work should prevent a more long-term unplanned equipment shutdown, caused by the cold, later in the week. Details weren't available about the exact piece(s) of equipment in danger of failing.

Temperatures in the city could stay below freezing for the next week, and could get down to 12 degrees at night, according to the National Weather Service.

The Herald building may be affected. (We learned of it minutes ago.) So if you're reading this post, PSE might be running late.
